Wet Stone Surface looks at the world from very close. Blue-grey stone fills the frame, with rippling patterns of light where a thin film of water moves across it, and darker veins and textures running through the rock. It feels cool, fresh and almost liquid. In his Abstractions in Nature series, Tim Burns looks for the abstractions nature creates on its own, including light reflected from drops and films of water. He does not set up the scene; he finds it, often on the shore, and frames it so we see a simple surface as a field of rhythm and color. The result is calm and meditative, like looking into a tide pool. The interplay of soft ripples and solid stone reflects his lifelong interest in surface and material, rooted in his training in ceramic sculpture. Behind acrylic glass the water seems to shimmer. It suits a bathroom, a spa-like bedroom or a minimal living space, bringing the cool calm of the coast indoors.
